(PRWEB) October 7, 2007 -- It's called "The Sleep of Reason", a title inspired by Goya's famous painting. Some have described it as a documentary. Some others say it's an extremely unconventional news report. But it is also being pitched by its television distributor as a murder mystery. Whatever the truth, it will be unveiled shortly: Studio Universal, the Italian channel of NBC Universal Global Networks, has secured the exclusive rights to premiere the complete first season during Halloween night, on October 31.
Accompanied by a lineup of classic horror titles such as Stuart Rosenberg's "Amityville Horror", Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" and Kubrick's "Shining", all eight episodes will be aired starting at 8PM to continue through midnight in what promises to become a thrilling Halloween marathon.
A day before, on October 30, selected episodes of the series will be advance screened at Ravenna Nightmare, the mystery and horror film festival now in its fifth edition.
"The Sleep of Reason" is a series of 10-minute, fast paced segments shot in documentary style by a small crew as they follow British journalist and writer Steve Bell in his personal investigation on the controversial murder of Italian American psychiatrist Dr. Claire D'Ebano. A specialist of regressive hypnosis, Dr. D'Ebano was unexpectedly killed in 2006 in Rome by one of her patients, a political analyst who was being treated for a common problem of insomnia.
Bell was performing research on his new novel when he became aware of the complex background surrounding the crime, and decided to divert his attention from his own project to focus on what he thought could become unique material for an article. Equipped with a DV camera, an operator and a list of witnesses and experts, Steve embarked on a series of interviews with a view to reconstructing the shocking events that ultimately lead to Dr. D'Ebano's death. Only to find out that behind what initially appeared to be a murder case lurked a string of strange occurrences that prompted Bell to look at the story from the visual angle of the paranormal.
Produced by Giovanni Pedde on a completely innovative news reporting format developed by Pedde with co-director Vittorio Testa, "The Sleep of Reason" soon evolved into something completely different than what Bell had envisioned. With the help of Dr. D'Ebano's estranged husband, the journalist relentlessly unveiled a new terrifying truth surrounding the deceased wife's hypnotic practice.
"It was the first time I was dealing with past life regression and with the use of hallucinogens to induce a state of trance" - Bell reports - "Soon enough, it became quite clear that Claire D'Ebano was using her patients as guinea pigs to experiment on something extremely dangerous."
The author of sci-fi thriller "Secret Revelation" and of fantasy novel "The Magic Island", Bell has devoted almost one year to assembling the footage, photographs and interviews incorporated in the series. The producers stepped in at a very early stage of development and helped him fill the gaps with fictionalized reconstructions of the real events, where necessary.
"I seem to know everything about this case" - Bell adds - "yet every time I add a new piece to the puzzle, this continues to amaze me as one of the most intricate projects I have ever been involved with."
Bell is currently working on the development of the series' second season and he is getting ready to launch the first season as a podcast shortly after Studio Universal's premiere. "I think after watching this you will agree that you can legitimately remain skeptical about the events I have reported" - Bell concludes - "but that you have the same urge as I do to at least try and find out what the truth is behind them".
